How Hard Is CELPIP?

By Natania · Study tips · Published · Updated · 4 min read

There is no pass or fail in CELPIP, so how hard it is depends on the level you need. Here are straight answers to the questions people ask about CELPIP's difficulty, section by section.

Is CELPIP a hard test?

How hard CELPIP is to pass depends on your target: it is a demanding test at high levels and a manageable one at lower levels. Reaching CLB 4 in Listening and Speaking for citizenship is very different from reaching CLB 9 in all four sections for Express Entry. The test itself is the same; what changes is how many questions you must get right and how well you must write and speak.

Most people find it harder than they expect in two ways: the time pressure, and the fact that one weak section can limit the whole result, because immigration requirements are set per section.

Is there a pass mark in CELPIP?

No. CELPIP has no passing score. Each section gets a level from M to 12, and that level equals the same CLB level. Whether a result is good enough depends on the program you apply for, so the real question is how hard it is to reach your target in your weakest section.

Which CELPIP section is the hardest?

It depends on the person, but many test takers find Writing or Speaking the hardest to push to a high level, because they are rated on four dimensions and small problems with structure, tone or a missed prompt point can hold the score back.

What makes each section difficult
SectionWhat makes it hard
ListeningEach recording plays once, and some questions appear only after the recording ends.
ReadingFour parts with separate timers, 38 questions in about 55–60 minutes, and answer options designed to look right.
WritingTwo tasks of 150–200 words in 27 and 26 minutes, with no spell checker.
SpeakingEight tasks with only 30–60 seconds to prepare and 60–90 seconds to speak, recorded by a computer.

How hard is it to get CLB 9 in CELPIP?

CLB 9 is a high level. In Listening and Reading it means getting most questions right, including the ones designed to trap you. In Writing and Speaking it means answers that are well organised, precise in vocabulary, mostly accurate in grammar and fully on task.

It is reachable for many people who already use English comfortably at work, but it usually takes deliberate practice with the format rather than general English study alone.

Is CELPIP harder than IELTS?

Neither test is harder for everyone. CELPIP is fully computer-based with Canadian accents and a recorded speaking test, while IELTS General Training has a face-to-face speaking test. IRCC treats the same CLB level from either test equally, so choose the format that suits you.

Is CELPIP hard for native English speakers?

Native speakers usually find the language easy but can still lose marks to the format. Running out of time in Reading, ignoring one of the three points in the Writing email, or giving an unstructured Speaking answer can all lower a score regardless of fluency.

If you are a confident speaker, one or two practice tests to learn the timing and task types is usually worth the time, especially if you need CLB 9 or higher.

A common example: a fluent speaker gets Speaking Task 5 and spends the whole minute describing their own choice, without ever comparing it with the other option or persuading the family member. The English is excellent, but the task asked for something else, and Task Fulfillment suffers.

Why does CELPIP feel harder on test day?

Fatigue and pressure. CELPIP-General takes about three hours in one sitting, and Speaking comes last, when many people are tired. Other test takers are speaking in the same room, and every task is strictly timed.

  • Take at least one full mock test in one sitting so the length is familiar.
  • Practise Speaking with background noise, such as a radio playing quietly.
  • Learn every timer in advance so nothing surprises you.

How long does it take to prepare for CELPIP?

It depends on the gap between your current level and your target. If you are already at or near your target, a few weeks of format and timing practice is often enough. If you need to move up one or more levels in a section, plan for a longer, steady period of practice with feedback.

The quickest way to estimate your timeline is to measure, not guess. Take a timed practice test or diagnostic, compare each section with your target, and give your study time to the biggest gap. Then check again after two or three weeks: if your results are moving, keep going; if they are flat, change how you practise rather than just practising more.

How can I make CELPIP easier for myself?

Remove the surprises. Learn every part and task, practise under the real timing, and spend most of your time on the section furthest from your target. A clear structure for each Speaking and Writing task makes a big difference, because you are no longer deciding how to organise your answer while the timer runs.

To see how far you are from your target, the free CELPass diagnostic predicts a CLB for each section in about 25 minutes.
