MAN: Good morning. I have an appointment with a career counselor at 10:30. My name is David Chen.
WOMAN: Good morning, Mr. Chen. I'm Sarah Wilson, the career counselor you'll be meeting with today. Please, have a seat. So, what brings you to our employment center?
MAN: Well, I've been job hunting for about three months now with no luck. I recently moved to Canada from overseas and, honestly, I'm finding the job market here quite challenging.
WOMAN: I understand. The transition can be difficult. Do you have your resume with you today?
MAN: Yes, here it is. I've applied for at least twenty positions that match my qualifications, but I've only had two interviews, and neither led to a job offer.
WOMAN: Let me take a look... Hmm, I notice your resume format is quite different from what Canadian employers typically expect. That might be part of the issue.
MAN: Really? I had no idea. What's wrong with it?
WOMAN: It's not that it's wrong, but Canadian employers have certain expectations. For instance, they prefer a skills-based format rather than a chronological one for someone in your situation.
Section 2 of 3
- Question 4, read aloud
Question 4: listen, then show the question text
How does the man feel about needing to change his resume?
- Question 5, read aloud
Question 5: listen, then show the question text
What type of interview questions surprised the man?
Transcript (read it after you answer)
MAN: I see. So my resume needs a complete overhaul. That's disappointing—I spent so much time on it.
WOMAN: Don't worry, we can work on that together. Another thing I noticed is that you've listed your international experience, which is excellent, but you haven't translated how those skills apply to the Canadian workplace.
MAN: That makes sense. I guess I assumed employers would make those connections themselves.
WOMAN: Unfortunately, they often don't take that extra step. Now, you mentioned you've had two interviews. How do you feel those went?
MAN: Um, to be honest, they felt a bit awkward. There were questions I wasn't expecting, like asking about my greatest weakness or telling them about a time I resolved a conflict at work.
WOMAN: Those are typical behavioral interview questions in Canada. Many employers use them to assess your soft skills and cultural fit.
MAN: I see. No wonder I felt unprepared. Is there any way I can practice for these types of questions?
WOMAN: Absolutely! We offer mock interview sessions every Thursday afternoon. Would you be interested in signing up for one?

What will most likely happen next?
Transcript (read it after you answer)
MAN: Yes, definitely. That sounds really helpful. When's the next available session?
WOMAN: Let me check our calendar... We have openings this Thursday at 2:00 and 3:30 pm. Which would work better for you?
MAN: I can make the 2:00 pm session. Do I need to prepare anything specific beforehand?
WOMAN: It would be good to bring your revised resume, which we can work on right now if you have time. Also, think about 5-6 scenarios from your past work experience that demonstrate problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership.
MAN: Okay, I can stay now to work on the resume. Actually, I have another question—do you think my accent might be affecting my job prospects?
WOMAN: Your English is very clear, Mr. Chen. But if you're concerned, we also offer a workplace communication workshop that many newcomers find valuable. It focuses on Canadian business communication styles rather than accent reduction.
MAN: That sounds perfect. When is the next workshop?
WOMAN: The next one starts next Monday and runs for three consecutive evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. I can add your name to the list if you're interested.
