NARRATOR: A sunflower field just outside Brandon, Manitoba, has become one of the province's most unexpected summer attractions. Farmer Dale Kowalski planted the forty-acre field last spring as an ordinary oilseed crop, and he never imagined it would draw a crowd. But when a visiting photographer shared pictures of the blooms online in early August, cars began lining the gravel road beside his property almost immediately. By the end of the month, an estimated eight thousand people had stopped to wander between the rows and take photographs.

NARRATOR: At first, Kowalski admits, the attention was more of a headache than a blessing. Visitors trampled sunflowers, blocked his equipment and left garbage scattered along the ditch. Rather than put up a fence, however, he decided to welcome them thoughtfully. He mowed a parking area, marked out walking paths, and began charging five dollars a car, with every dollar contributed to the local food bank. So far, the field has raised more than eleven thousand dollars.

NARRATOR: Neighbouring farmers have taken notice, and at least two are considering planting sunflowers of their own next year. Kowalski, however, says the season will end as planned. The flowers will be harvested for seed in September, and the field will go back to wheat.
