MAN: A workshop tucked behind a hardware store on King Street has spent the summer turning old, broken-down bicycles into rides ready for the school year. On Saturday, the shop, called Second Spin, handed out two hundred refurbished bikes to children across Miramichi, New Brunswick, free of charge. Wren Bramwell, who started the project three years ago in her garage, said the idea came from noticing how many kids in her neighbourhood didn't have a way to get to school once the bus routes changed. "We had donated bikes stacking up faster than we could fix them," she said. "So we brought in volunteers who actually know what they're doing." One of those volunteers, Cormac Amadi, a retired mechanic, has been showing up most weeknights since June to teach teenagers how to true a wheel and patch a tube. He said several of his students have gotten quicker at it than he is now. Families lined up outside the shop before it even opened Saturday morning, and by early afternoon every bike had a new owner. Bramwell said the shop already has another 150 donated bikes waiting in the back room, but only enough volunteer hours some weeks to fix a handful of them. Still, she's hoping to hit three hundred giveaways by next summer.
