The question

At your workplace, you’ve been feeling the pressure of work spilling over into your personal time, either through late-night emails or lack of opportunities to recharge. Management has asked all employees for input on which new benefit would most help people like you achieve a healthier work-life balance.

Which policy should employers adopt to improve work-life balance? What’s your opinion?

- Option A: Limit after-hours work communications, such as emails and calls.

- Option B: Offer paid personal days for non-medical reasons.

Please choose one option and explain your preference.

Write about 150-200 words.

Excellent answer: around CLB 11–12

As someone who struggles with maintaining clear boundaries between work and home life, I strongly advocate for restricting after-hours communications (Option A). Constant connectivity undermines the ability to truly recharge, leading to burnout. Although paid personal days offer periodic breaks, enforcing no-work zones outside office hours would provide the daily respite that employees like myself genuinely need.

Good answer: around CLB 7–8

Lately, I’ve noticed that after-hours messages make it difficult for me to fully disconnect from work. If my employer limited emails and calls after working hours, I could enjoy my evenings and weekends. While paid personal days are a good idea, it’s more important to have daily boundaries. That’s why I believe option A would help me most.

Basic answer: around CLB 4–5

I feel stressed when I get work emails late at night. It’s hard to relax with my family. I think my company should stop sending messages after work hours. This will help me and others rest better. Personal days are nice, but I need time off every day. I choose option A.
