The question

The local high school is considering making changes to its curriculum to better prepare students for the future. Some educators and parents believe that financial literacy courses should be added to teach students how to manage money, budget, and understand taxes. Others believe that computer programming courses should be prioritized to equip students with essential technology skills. Since only one course can be added due to limited teaching staff, the school administration is asking for student and parent input.

Which option do you prefer? Why?

-Option A: Introduce financial literacy courses to teach students about budgeting, saving, and taxes.

-Option B: Introduce computer programming courses to teach coding and software development skills.

Excellent answer: around CLB 11–12

I strongly support Option A, as financial literacy is a fundamental life skill that should be prioritized in the high school curriculum. Research shows that young adults often struggle with financial management due to a lack of formal education on budgeting, taxes, and credit. Teaching these skills in school would empower students to make informed financial decisions, reducing future debt and financial instability. While computer programming is valuable, it is a specialized skill relevant to certain career paths. Financial literacy, on the other hand, is universally applicable, affecting every individual regardless of their profession. By equipping students with practical money management skills, we ensure that they enter adulthood with confidence and financial security.

Good answer: around CLB 7–8

I believe Option A is the better choice because financial literacy is essential for all students, regardless of their future career paths. First, many students graduate without understanding how to budget, pay taxes, or manage debt. This lack of knowledge can lead to financial struggles in adulthood. Teaching financial literacy would help students make smart money decisions. Second, while computer programming is useful, not every student will pursue a career in technology. Financial skills, however, are necessary for everyone, whether they become teachers, engineers, or business owners. By adding financial literacy to the curriculum, we would be preparing students for real-world responsibilities.

Basic answer: around CLB 4–5

I choose Option A because money skills are very important. Many students don’t know how to save money or pay bills. When they become adults, they need to understand these things. Also, learning about taxes and credit cards will help students in real life. Many people make mistakes with money because no one teaches them in school. Computer skills are good too, but not everyone will work in technology. Everyone uses money, so I think financial literacy is more useful for all students.
