CELPIP Listening Course · Lesson 4 of 9
Part 2: Listening to a Daily Life Conversation
By CELPass Editorial Team · 2 min read · Updated
Part 2 is one everyday conversation of about one to two minutes, with five questions. It is often about plans, purchases or neighbours.
Relationship and feelings
Questions often ask how the speakers know each other or how one of them feels. Listen to tone as well as words: a flat "great" can mean the opposite. Note the relationship early (co-workers, neighbours, customer and clerk).
Details that change
Times, dates, prices and places often change mid-conversation: "Let's meet at 3. Oh wait, I have an appointment. Make it 4:30." Cross out the old detail in your notes and keep the latest one.
What happens next
The last question often asks what one speaker will do next. The answer is usually in the last few lines, so keep listening after the conversation seems finished.
Key points
- Note the relationship and listen for tone.
- Keep only the latest time, price or place.
- The last lines tell you what happens next.
Exercise
"The blue one's $40… actually, it's on sale, so $32. Oh, but I've got a coupon for another five off."
