Part 3: Listening for Information

By CELPass Editorial Team · 2 min read · Updated

Part 3 is an explanation or interview of about two to three minutes, with six questions about facts, steps and reasons.

Follow the order

Explanations move in order: first, then, after that, finally. Questions usually follow the same order, so number your notes. If a speaker explains a process (how to apply, how a program works), write each step on its own line.

Corrections and contrasts

Words like but, however, actually and in fact often signal that the previous statement is being corrected or limited: "It's free for residents. Well, actually, there's a $10 registration fee." The answer is the corrected version.

Said, not assumed

A common trap is an option that is generally true or sensible but was not said. Answer only from the recording.

Key points

  • Number your notes; questions follow the talk's order.
  • Contrast words signal corrections.
  • Choose what was said, not what is generally true.

Exercise

"You'll need to bring two pieces of ID. Well, one is fine if it has a photo and your address."

  1. What ID is required?
