CELPIP Listening Course · Lesson 8 of 9
Part 6: Listening to Viewpoints
By CELPass Editorial Team · 2 min read · Updated
Part 6 is usually the hardest part: a talk of about three minutes presenting different opinions on an issue, with six questions and more advanced vocabulary.
Two sides and a speaker
The talk presents a main argument and an opposing view. Use two columns, one per side, and add reasons as you hear them. Then mark which side the speaker personally favours, if they say.
Reported versus own view
Speakers often describe an argument in order to reject it: "Some people believe that… However, the evidence shows…". The trap answer is the argument they mention and then dismiss. Listen for the turn.
Harder vocabulary
You will not know every word. Focus on the signposts that show structure (on the other hand, critics argue, the key issue, as a result) and on the overall direction of each side. Regular listening to podcasts or radio discussions builds this skill.
Key points
- Two columns: side A, side B, with reasons.
- Arguments mentioned and then rejected are traps.
- Follow signposts when vocabulary gets hard.
Exercise
"Many assume a four-day work week lowers productivity. But companies that tried it often report the opposite: fewer sick days and more focused work."
- What does the speaker suggest about a four-day week?
Show answers
- It can maintain or improve productivity. "Lowers productivity" is the assumption the speaker rejects.
