The question

Your city is enhancing public safety and seeking resident opinions. Some propose installing more streetlights to improve visibility at night. Others suggest adding more security cameras to deter crime. Due to budget limits, only one option can be implemented.

Which option do you prefer? Why?

-Option A: Install more streetlights.

-Option B: Add more security cameras.

Excellent answer: around CLB 11–12

I strongly advocate for Option A, as installing street lights offers a proactive and essential boost to public safety. Enhanced visibility not only prevents accidents—such as a cyclist avoiding a pothole—but also deters petty crime by eliminating dark corners where incidents often occur. For example, well-lit streets near schools could reassure parents and students alike. Security cameras, while valuable for monitoring, are largely reactive and lose effectiveness without adequate lighting to capture clear footage. Streetlights provide a universal, preventive benefit that serves all residents, from commuters to late-night walkers. Option A is a strategic investment in a safer, more confident community.

Good answer: around CLB 7–8

I prefer Option A because more street lights enhance safety for the entire community. Better lighting helps prevent accidents, like someone tripping on a sidewalk, and makes people feel secure walking home after dark. For instance, a well-lit park could encourage more evening use without fear. While security cameras might catch criminals, they don’t solve the everyday problem of poor visibility. Streetlights have a wider impact, benefiting drivers and pedestrians alike. Option A is a practical choice that improves daily life for everyone.

Basic answer: around CLB 4–5

I choose Option A because streetlights make the city safer at night. When it’s bright, people can see where they’re going, so they won’t trip or feel afraid. For example, kids can walk home from a friend’s house without trouble. Cameras are fine, but they don’t light up dark streets, so they’re not as helpful. Streetlights are good for everyone, like drivers or people walking their dogs. Option A is better because it keeps us all safe and happy.
