The question

Your school is rethinking its lunch program after hearing mixed views on food options from students and parents. They’ve sent a survey to get your input, wanting to create a menu that supports health and learning while keeping students happy. This is your chance to decide what’s on your plate!

Which option do you prefer? Why?

-Option A: Offer only healthy meals, with no junk food available.

-Option B: Allow students to choose between healthy meals and junk food.

Excellent answer: around CLB 11–12

I firmly support Option A, as prioritizing healthy meals in schools is essential for students' physical and cognitive development. Numerous studies have demonstrated that well-balanced meals significantly enhance students' concentration, energy levels, and academic performance. By providing only nutritious options, schools play a proactive role in shaping long-term health habits and reducing risks of obesity and diet-related illnesses. Although personal choice is valuable, an educational institution's role extends beyond academics—it also includes fostering a foundation for lifelong well-being. Allowing junk food would contradict the fundamental purpose of a school lunch program. Thus, ensuring access to exclusively healthy meals is a responsible and impactful decision.

Good answer: around CLB 7–8

I prefer Option A because schools should promote healthy eating habits among students. First, nutritious meals help students stay focused in class. Studies show that eating fresh and healthy food improves concentration and learning ability. Second, many children develop lifelong eating habits in school. If schools encourage healthy choices, students will carry these habits into adulthood. While choice is important, schools have a responsibility to provide meals that benefit students’ well-being. For this reason, I believe only healthy meals should be offered.

Basic answer: around CLB 4–5

I choose Option A because healthy food is better for students. Eating fruits, vegetables, and good meals helps students grow and stay strong. Also, junk food can make students feel tired and unhealthy. If the school only gives healthy food, students will have more energy for studying. Students can eat junk food at home if they want, but school should give them good food for their health.
