Transcript (read it after you answer)

WOMAN: Hi Paul, I signed the science-centre permission form. Did the school confirm you as a trip volunteer yet?

MAN: Not yet — my background check expired last month, and the renewal might not clear before Thursday.

WOMAN: I assumed my signature covered our daughter and whichever parent went along with her.

MAN: Apparently it only covers her. Any adult riding the bus as a volunteer needs a current check of their own.

WOMAN: Couldn't you drive separately and just meet the class there?

MAN: I asked, but the school locked her bus plan in on Tuesday, so her ride can't change now.

WOMAN: So her spot is fine; it's only your volunteer place that's still hanging on the check.

MAN: Right, and the teacher already has another approved parent ready if mine doesn't come through in time.

WOMAN: At least our daughter still goes, even if you can't be one of the chaperones.

MAN: Exactly. I'd love to help, but I won't have the teacher hold a group open on a maybe.

WOMAN: Then tell her to use the other parent. If your check does arrive, could you still meet them there?

MAN: I could visit, but I couldn't supervise a group or ride back with the class, so it'd be half-in.

WOMAN: That's more awkward than it's worth — let's just do the science centre together another weekend.

MAN: Agreed. I'll take over the school pickup at five, and collect our son first if the bus runs past five-thirty.
