CELPIP Speaking Task 2 Sample Answer: A Cultural Misunderstanding

One cultural misunderstanding I’ll never forget happened during my first business trip to South Korea. I was invited to a dinner with my colleagues, and I didn’t realize that it’s customary to wait for the eldest person at the table to start eating before you begin. I started eating right away, and I noticed everyone looking at me awkwardly. Thankfully, one of my colleagues gently explained the tradition, and I quickly apologized and waited. I felt mortified at the time, but the experience taught me the importance of understanding and respecting cultural etiquette. Since then, I’ve made it a point to educate myself about local customs before traveling, and it’s helped me build stronger connections with people from different backgrounds.

I experienced a cultural misunderstanding when I visited Japan for the first time. I didn’t know that it’s polite to take off your shoes before entering someone’s home. I walked into my friend’s house with my shoes on, and I could tell they were surprised. They kindly explained the custom to me, and I apologized and took my shoes off. I felt a bit embarrassed, but I learned to research cultural norms before traveling to a new place.

I go to new country one time. I not know their rule. I say hello loud, but they not like it. My friend tell me to be quiet. I learn to be careful next time.
