The question

Lately, you’ve noticed that crossing busy streets in your neighborhood can sometimes feel unsafe, especially in bad weather or at night. You and your neighbors have discussed possible changes to make crosswalks more visible and secure for everyone in your area.

Which improvement should be made to crosswalks first? What’s your opinion?

- Option A: Install flashing lights and reflective paint at all crosswalks.

- Option B: Employ crossing guards during busy hours near schools and shopping areas.

Please choose one option and explain your preference.

Write about 150-200 words.

Excellent answer: around CLB 11–12

Given how frequently I and my neighbors cross busy intersections—often at odd hours or during poor weather—I believe installing flashing lights and reflective paint at all crosswalks (Option A) is the best solution. These improvements would ensure constant, citywide visibility for pedestrians, significantly reducing accident risks. While crossing guards are valuable near specific locations, enhanced visibility benefits everyone in the community at all times, making our streets safer overall.

Good answer: around CLB 7–8

From my experience in my neighborhood, installing flashing lights and reflective paint at crosswalks would make a big difference. Many people cross the street after dark, and drivers often don’t see them in time. While crossing guards are helpful near schools, they can’t be present at every crosswalk or at all hours. Option A makes every crosswalk safer for everyone, day or night.

Basic answer: around CLB 4–5

I think putting flashing lights and reflective paint at all crosswalks would help me and my neighbors feel safer. Sometimes it’s hard to see people at night or in the rain. If drivers see bright lights and paint, they will slow down. Crossing guards are good too, but they are not everywhere. I choose option A because it works all the time.
