The question

Environmental researchers are developing new technologies to clean up ocean pollution. Some experts argue that investing in large-scale machines that collect plastic waste from the ocean surface would be the most effective solution. Others believe that preventing plastic waste from entering the ocean by improving recycling programs and banning single-use plastics is the better long-term strategy. Due to budget constraints, only one approach can be funded.

Which option do you prefer? Why?

-Option A: Invest in machines to remove plastic waste from the ocean.

-Option B: Focus on preventing plastic waste from entering the ocean.

Excellent answer: around CLB 11–12

I strongly advocate for Option B, as proactive waste prevention is the most sustainable approach to addressing ocean pollution. Banning single-use plastics and improving recycling infrastructure directly reduce the amount of waste that enters marine ecosystems. In contrast, cleanup machines, while helpful, only treat the symptoms rather than solving the root problem. Investing in prevention measures fosters long-term environmental responsibility and ensures healthier oceans for future generations.

Good answer: around CLB 7–8

I support Option B because prevention is the best way to protect the ocean from plastic pollution. First, reducing plastic use stops pollution before it happens. If fewer plastic products are used, there will be less waste in the first place. Second, cleanup machines are expensive and may not remove all waste effectively. Focusing on recycling and plastic bans will create a long-term solution. For these reasons, I believe preventing plastic waste is the smarter choice.

Basic answer: around CLB 4–5

I choose Option B because stopping plastic waste before it enters the ocean is better. If we recycle more, less plastic will go into the water. Also, banning plastic bags and bottles will help keep the ocean clean. If we don’t use plastic, we don’t have to clean it later. Cleaning the ocean is good, but preventing pollution is the best way to protect the environment.
