The question

Your local government has an empty lot in your neighborhood and wants resident input on its use, noticing debates about parking needs versus green space desires. They’ve sent a survey to hear your preference, aiming to choose a plan that improves daily life for most people. This is your chance to shape your community!

Which option do you prefer? Why?

-Option A: Convert the space into a community park with trees and walking paths.

-Option B: Use the space to create a parking lot for residents and visitors.

Excellent answer: around CLB 11–12

I advocate for transforming the vacant lot into a community park, a decision that promises enduring benefits for our neighborhood’s health, aesthetics, and social fabric. Urban green spaces are proven to combat pollution and regulate temperatures, countering the environmental strain a parking lot would impose through heightened emissions and congestion. A park also addresses the pressing need for recreational areas in our community. Residents, especially those without private gardens, would gain a vital space for physical activity and relaxation, fostering improved mental well-being—an outcome no asphalt expanse could replicate. The social advantages are equally compelling. With walking paths and open areas, the park would encourage interaction, strengthening community ties and offering a safe haven for children to play. Admittedly, parking shortages concern some, yet expanding public transit or optimizing existing lots presents a smarter fix than sacrificing this opportunity. In choosing a park, we invest in a sustainable, vibrant future over short-term convenience. It’s a vision I wholeheartedly endorse for our neighborhood’s long-term prosperity.

Good answer: around CLB 7–8

I prefer Option A because a community park would bring more value to our neighborhood. First, it gives everyone a space to exercise and enjoy nature. Many residents lack access to green areas, so a park would help them stay healthy and relaxed. Second, parks are better for the environment. They clean the air and reduce noise, while a parking lot would add more cars, pollution, and traffic. Our neighborhood deserves a peaceful space, not more chaos. Although parking might help some people, we already have enough spots nearby. A park would make our area more beautiful and bring people together. For these reasons, I strongly believe a community park is the right choice.

Basic answer: around CLB 4–5

I choose Option A because a park is better for our neighborhood. A park gives us a place to walk, play, and breathe fresh air. Many people don’t have yards, so this would be good for them to relax outside. Also, a park looks nice. Trees and paths are prettier than a parking lot full of cars. Cars make noise and dirty air, but a park stays quiet and clean. Last, it’s good for kids and families. Children can run around safely, and people can talk to neighbors. I think a park will make our community happier. That’s why I like this idea best.
