The question

Your city is exploring ways to reduce noise pollution, which has become a significant concern for residents. Some suggest strict regulations on vehicle noise, construction work, and loud businesses to create a quieter environment. Others propose building more noise barriers and soundproofing measures near highways and busy streets. Since both solutions require funding, the city will prioritize only one.

Which option do you prefer? Why?

-Option A: Enforce stricter regulations on noise sources (vehicles, construction, businesses).

-Option B: Build noise barriers and install soundproofing measures.

Excellent answer: around CLB 11–12

I strongly advocate for Option A, as implementing noise regulations at the source is the most effective and long-term solution for reducing urban noise pollution. Excessive noise from traffic, construction, and commercial establishments negatively impacts mental health and sleep quality. Establishing clear regulations—such as limiting construction hours and enforcing noise limits for businesses—ensures that disturbances are minimized at their origin rather than merely masked by barriers. While soundproofing infrastructure can mitigate noise, it does not address the root cause. By promoting responsible noise management, the city can create a more livable and harmonious urban environment.

Good answer: around CLB 7–8

I prefer Option A because noise pollution is best controlled by reducing noise at the source. First, stricter rules on vehicle noise and construction hours will immediately improve the quality of life for residents. People should not have to suffer from excessive noise at all hours of the day. Second, businesses should be responsible for managing their noise levels. By enforcing regulations, the city can ensure a quieter environment without needing expensive soundproofing projects. For these reasons, I believe noise control regulations are the best solution.

Basic answer: around CLB 4–5

I choose Option A because loud noises are a big problem. If the city makes rules for cars and businesses to be quieter, life will be better for everyone. Also, construction is very noisy. If workers follow rules about when they can work, people will not be disturbed. Noise barriers help, but it is better to stop noise before it happens.
