The question

As cities grow, pedestrian safety becomes increasingly important. Accidents involving walkers and vehicles can be reduced by implementing effective safety measures.

Which safety improvement should your city prioritize?

-Option A: Install more crosswalks and traffic lights at busy intersections.

-Option B: Create “walking zones” with benches, gardens, and slow-traffic areas for relaxation and safety.

Please choose one option and explain your preference.

Excellent answer: around CLB 11–12

In my view, prioritizing the installation of additional crosswalks and traffic lights at busy intersections (Option A) is the most effective strategy for enhancing pedestrian safety. These measures directly address accident hotspots by controlling both pedestrian and vehicular movements, thereby significantly reducing the risk of collisions. While dedicated walking zones (Option B) would certainly provide comfortable, scenic areas for relaxation, their scope is limited to select locations. Crosswalks and traffic signals, on the other hand, offer city-wide benefits and can be implemented more rapidly and cost-effectively. Ultimately, widespread crosswalks and traffic lights create a safer, more accessible urban environment for all pedestrians.

Good answer: around CLB 7–8

I would choose installing more crosswalks and traffic lights. This is a direct way to make the city safer for pedestrians. With more crosswalks, people can cross roads without fear, and traffic lights make drivers stop. While walking zones with benches and gardens would be pleasant, they only help certain areas and might cost more to build. Crosswalks and lights can be added to many busy places, helping more people every day. Therefore, I believe Option A is more practical for improving safety quickly.

Basic answer: around CLB 4–5

I think the city should install more crosswalks and traffic lights. This will help people cross the road safely. Many accidents happen when people cross busy streets. If we have more crosswalks and lights, drivers will have to stop, and it will be safer for everyone. Walking zones are nice, but not all streets can have them. Crosswalks and lights are more important because they help everywhere. I believe option A is the best for protecting people in the city.
