WOMAN: Hi Peter, my children asked whether we could put a bird feeder beside the shared fence. They miss watching birds now that winter has started.

MAN: Hey Jia. I like birds too, but seeds fell into my garden from the old feeder. Squirrels dug around the bulbs, and several new shoots were damaged.

WOMAN: I remember. Removing feeders entirely would disappoint the children, though putting the same open tray back would probably repeat the problem.

MAN: A covered model might scatter less. We could position it farther inside your yard rather than directly over the fence, if the children can still see it.

WOMAN: They can see the back corner from the kitchen, though binoculars may help. I'll use the recommended amount instead of filling it until seed spills.

MAN: Could we treat it as a trial? If squirrels still gather or plants are disturbed, moving it should be part of the plan, not an argument after damage appears.

WOMAN: Yes. I'll sweep fallen seed every other day and ask the children to help. Watching wildlife should include looking after the space beneath it.

MAN: I'll tell you if I notice digging on my side. I won't move the feeder myself; it's in your yard, and you may not have seen what happened here.

WOMAN: Thanks. If I'm away, send a photograph from the gate with the feeder in it. Last time I couldn't tell whether the bare patch was even below the tray.

MAN: After a windy night, I may find loose seed once even if the covered feeder is working. I'll note the weather when I send anything.

WOMAN: Let's use two weeks. I'll note the cleaning days; if your photographs keep showing new digging between them, that corner may be the problem.

MAN: And if they don't, we can move it toward your back wall. From my garden, that spot is nearly twice as far from the bulbs.

WOMAN: I'll buy one small covered feeder, not matching ones for both yards. We can mark its first position in a photograph and start the two-week check on Saturday.

MAN: I'll report changes, and you can compare them with cleaning days before deciding whether the position works.
