Transcript (read it after you answer)

WOMAN: Hi George, Carlos moves in tomorrow, and our fridge already looks full. We should divide the shelves before his groceries arrive instead of arguing afterward.

MAN: Hey. I can clear the top shelf, but it sits directly below the freezer and sometimes freezes lettuce. Giving him that shelf alone would not be fair.

WOMAN: Let us make the middle shelf his main space.

MAN: That works, except my lunch bag occupies the middle shelf every weekday. I can use the bottom corner if we remove the unused water pitcher.

WOMAN: The pitcher belongs to Gwen downstairs; she left it after the picnic. I will return it tonight rather than quietly turn borrowed property into storage.

MAN: Good. What should be shared? Milk is difficult because Carlos drinks a different kind, but butter, ketchup, and cooking sauces could become common items.

WOMAN: We should ask before assuming. For the first week, put our condiments in the door and leave one empty door bin for whatever he brings.

MAN: Agreed. The produce drawers are another issue. We currently mix vegetables with fruit, and forgotten food hides at the back.

WOMAN: Give Carlos the left drawer and keep the right one shared for vegetables used in group meals.

MAN: A shared drawer needs a simple rule. If someone buys vegetables for a private lunch, a named paper bag keeps them from being cooked by mistake.

WOMAN: That is clear without counting every carrot.

MAN: I will return the pitcher and buy two shallow bins. One bin holds our short jars on top; the other helps Carlos keep meal containers upright.

WOMAN: Actually we need three bins, not two, since the shared drawer needs one too for loose onions and garlic. Tomorrow we show him the arrangement as a starting point, not a fixed law. After a week, we ask what freezes, crowds, or stays empty.

MAN: Perfect. He receives useful space immediately, our weekday routines still work, and we can revise the system using experience instead of guesses.
